In a recent interview with Essence Magazine, singer Tems discussed her distinctive style and the significance of staying true to oneself.
Gistme9ja reported that Speaking with Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, Tems explained that her unique fashion choices reflect her authentic self rather than an attempt to convey a specific message.
She also addressed the pressures faced by artists and women to adhere to certain styles, underscoring the value of embracing one’s individuality.
She said:
“You should be yourself even if something else is expected of you. You win, automatically, when you are yourself, no matter what that looks like. That’s why there’s variety.
She argued that there shouldn’t be a standard for dressing, as people’s uniqueness is what makes them special.
“We’re different and are not all meant to be the same. And I know there’s a standard, but there shouldn’t be one. There shouldn’t be a standard for what people should dress like if they’re artists, or what people should dress like if they’re women. I just feel like we’re all unique. There shouldn’t be a requirement. That’s what I mean by standard. There shouldn’t be a requirement or some kind of expectation that you dress a certain way”.
When asked about being a role model for self-love and acceptance, Tems expressed her appreciation and emphasized her commitment to authenticity.
She encouraged others to fully embrace their true selves, noting that trying to imitate someone else ultimately undermines one’s own value.
“I’m grateful that this message is coming through. I truly believe that people should be themselves. I can’t be anyone else; it just won’t work. Attempting to be someone else is a disservice to yourself. You should simply be who you are. If you start trying to be something you’re not, you’ve already lost your way. That’s definitely a lesson from how I live my life,” she stated.
