In a recent conversation about Afrobeats, Nigerian singer Tems strongly reaffirmed that Afrobeats is rooted in Nigeria, countering misconceptions about its origin.
During a discussion in an interview, Tems emphasized that Afrobeats is not South African, but distinctly Nigerian. She further addressed some critiques, particularly those from Jamaican reggae legend Buju Banton, who had claimed that the genre lacked substance and did not reflect the realities of its audience.
Tems pointed out that Afrobeats is a genre designed for enjoyment and escapism, not necessarily for addressing societal issues, as Buju Banton had suggested. According to her, Afrobeats serves a specific purpose in Nigeria, offering a creative outlet and a form of relief from the country’s harsh realities.
While Buju Banton criticized the genre for its perceived lack of depth, Tems defended it, stressing that its cultural significance should not be undermined.
