Paul Okoye, one half of the popular P-Square duo, has long been a prominent figure in the music industry.
In a recent interview, Paul Okoye shared three major concerns about the current state of music and the songs being released today. Here’s what he had to say:
First, addressing the short lifespan of contemporary music, Paul Okoye stated:
PAUL OKOYE: “Nowadays, I see what’s happening in the music industry. Music only lasts for three to four months.
It’s not fair what you guys are doing to yourselves because, in the long run, years from now, it will fade completely.”
Secondly, discussing the lack of lyrical content in modern songs, he said:
PAUL OKOYE: “I’m not saying today’s music lacks messages, but I think these days we’re focusing more on the producers, the sound, the beat. Lyrically, no. Some people are trying, but there needs to be improvement.”
Finally, elaborating on his broader concerns about the new age of music and the types of songs being produced, Paul Okoye remarked:
PAUL OKOYE: “For some, music today is all about ‘this is the new way, the new style, what everybody is doing, following a trend.’ I can tell you that the era of proper, meaningful music is almost gone.
Those types of songs were ones parents felt comfortable playing in front of their kids. Now, I guarantee you that 80% of current songs are ones some parents wouldn’t want their children to hear.
That’s what’s missing. If your song is only suitable for 18 to 23-year-olds, it may be fine for Gen Z. But when you start reaching 30, 35, and have kids, you won’t play those songs for them.
Consequently, the artist who made that song won’t have longevity and will lose relevance. The song won’t be evergreen because parents will abandon it for more mature music, influencing their children.”
What are your thoughts on Paul Okoye’s views? Do you agree or disagree?
