Nigerians have expressed outrage over the Ooni of Ife’s decision to unveil a golden statue of First Lady Remi Tinubu at Obafemi Awolowo University in Osun State. The ceremony, which was part of the Ooni’s 50th birthday celebrations, also included the commissioning of a 2.7-kilometer road and a pavilion named after Mrs. Tinubu.
Critics have labeled the move as a “misplaced priority,” arguing that the resources spent on the statue and other projects could have been better utilized to address pressing national issues. The Ooni praised Mrs. Tinubu for her strong leadership, dedication to education, and support for women’s empowerment.
The projects unveiled included the Senator Oluremi Tinubu Way, a 2.7km road named in her honor, a golden statue erected to immortalize her “virtuous personality,” and a pavilion and monument donated by the Ooni and named after her. Additionally, the OJAJA Hostel, the largest in Obafemi Awolowo University’s history, was named after Mrs. Tinubu.
