In a shocking turn of events, a 24-year-old Nigerian woman has confessed to selling her three-year-old brother, Friday Okonkwo, for ₦410k in Adamawa State. Blessing Okonkwo attributed her actions to severe economic hardship in the country.
She deceived her mother, Hauwa Lawan, by pretending to enroll her brother in a school in Mubi, 40 kilometers away. Instead, she sold him to human trafficker Efunaya Nabufe, who took him to Enugu State.
Blessing used the proceeds to buy a grinding machine and gave her boyfriend N200,000 for their traditional wedding expenses.
Hauwa Lawan expressed disbelief that her daughter could sell her sibling to a stranger. She recounted how Blessing lied about enrolling her brother in school and how she didn’t hear from him for a year.
The truth emerged when Blessing’s father discovered the child’s whereabouts during her marriage proposal. He consulted an oracle, and Blessing confessed that the child was alive and living with a woman in Enugu.
The police arrested Blessing and Efunaya Nabufe, and SP Suleiman Nguroje confirmed that they will be charged to court after a thorough investigation.
