Afrobeats singer and producer Maleek Berry has recounted an intriguing story about his early collaboration with Davido.
Berry remembered how, despite Davido’s affluent background, he pretended to be less well-off during their studio sessions.
Speaking on the ’90s Baby podcast, Berry also shared how he first connected with Davido via social media, thanks to an introduction from one of Davido’s cousins.
Berry revealed that back then, Davido had only 4,000 YouTube views and was relatively unknown.
He took Davido to record in a London studio, where they bonded over their shared passion for Nigerian music. However, Berry was stunned by the luxury and affluence when he later visited Davido’s father’s mansion.
Berry realized that Davido’s family was “incredibly wealthy” and that Davido had been modest about his background.
He recalled, “I remember when Davido had only 4,000 YouTube views. When he came to London, I would take him to a studio in Bermondsey to record.”
Berry explained that a cousin of Davido’s had introduced them via social media, and at that time, Davido was relatively unknown.
“We were just two Nigerian guys who loved music. Davido acted as if he was one of those struggling kids. But when I visited his father’s mansion, I was amazed there’s wealth, and then there’s real wealth!”
Berry said, “I was completely surprised because, at the time, I didn’t think Davido had money. He always blended in with us. But when I saw his family’s mansion, I realized just how wealthy they were.”
Berry also acknowledged that Davido played a key role in introducing him to Wizkid years later, emphasizing the importance of their early collaboration and friendship.
