Grammy-nominated Nigerian artist Ololade Ahmed, widely recognized as Asake, has shared his reasons for primarily singing in Yoruba.
In a recent Instagram fan interaction, the ‘Ome Ope’ star discussed his preference for performing in his native language. Although he is capable of singing in English, Asake expressed that he feels more at ease with Yoruba.
He also suggested that listeners who are uncomfortable with his use of Yoruba should consider not listening to his music.
Asake stated,
“I’m more comfortable singing in Yoruba; it’s not that I can’t sing in English. If you’re down with me, embrace my Yoruba. If not, then move on.”
All three of his albums—‘Mr Money With The Vibes’ (2022), ‘Work of Art’ (2023), and his latest, ‘Lungu Boy’—feature lyrics predominantly in Yoruba.
His popular track ‘Amapiano’ was nominated for Best African Music Performance at the 66th Grammys, despite being mostly in Yoruba, but ultimately lost to South African artist Tyla’s viral hit ‘Water’.
