Singer Omah Lay has expressed concern that the afrobeats genre is under threat.
He criticized the trend of diluting the genre to cater to international audiences and its increasing commercialization.
During an appearance on the Zach Sang Show, Omah Lay remarked that afrobeats no longer seems to be in safe hands.
He noted that the financial appeal of afrobeats is leading many artists to prioritize profit over passion.
“There’s too much money in Afrobeats. Artists are just chasing the cash,” he commented. “I think people are compromising the essence of Afrobeats, and it’s becoming excessively commercialized.
At this point, I don’t think Afrobeats is in good hands.”
The afrobeats genre has recently faced criticism, including a notable remark from renowned Jamaican reggae artist Buju Banton, who called it “f*ckery.”
In a provocative interview, he argued that afrobeats lacks substance and predicted it would eventually disappear.
