After testing positive for drugs, professional boxer Robert Helenius of Finland was given a two-year suspension from the sport.
Following Helenius’s fight with Anthony Joshua in August 2023, UK Anti-Doping carried out the testing.
Climifene is a drug that the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) forbids, and Helenius tested positive for it.
Anthony Joshua knocked Helenius out in the seventh round at London’s O2 Arena. Helenius denied using performance-enhancing drugs on purpose.
Later on, he denied any involvement and blamed the clomifene on tainted eggs and chicken meat eaten prior to the game.
Nevertheless, the UK Anti-Doping organization determined that Helenius’s evidence was insufficient to establish the clomifene’s source. He was therefore unable to shorten the two-year ban.
The UK Anti-Doping Agency said in a statement that was made public on Friday:
“Mr Helenius was unable to provide evidence that eggs and chicken he had consumed in advance of the bout originated from hens that had been administered clomifene”
“He was therefore unable to identify the source of clomifene in his Sample and therefore unable to reduce the applicable period of Ineligibility of two years,” it added.
The ban, effective from September 18, 2023, will last until September 17, 2025. During this time, Helenius will not be eligible to participate in professional boxing events.
