Protesters have taken to the streets of Ibadan, demanding the release of popular radio presenter Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, who was arrested in connection with the tragic stampede at a children’s funfair that claimed the lives of at least 36 children. The protesters, mostly women and mothers, chanted “Free Oriyomi Hamzat” and expressed outrage over his arrest, stating that his only offense was providing for the needy.
Hamzat, along with Queen Naomi, the event organizer, and others involved, are facing murder charges. However, supporters argue that Hamzat was unfairly implicated, citing viral footage that shows him attempting to rescue victims and disperse the crowd .
The stampede occurred when an overwhelming crowd of over 7,500 people showed up for an event designed for 5,000 children, leading to a devastating loss of lives. As the case unfolds, Hamzat’s supporters remain steadfast in their calls for justice, insisting that his detention is unwarranted.
